Project Updates
o
In a speech with Ben Marts last Wednesday,
October 17, Rocky, Casey, Zach, and Alex all decided that the December trip was
no longer a consideration. Alex says that a trip during Spring Break is more
likely, and guarantees a trip by the end of the academic school year of 2012-2013.
He says the trip will last about seven days.
o
For those who plan to go on the next trip to
Belize, be sure to have a passport ahead of time. Note that a Visa will not be
needed.
o
Ben Marts said last week that he was making the
final adjustments to the water tower design, calling upon the help of a
professional and experienced engineer.
-
Megan Peters plans to go to Mozambique in Africa
sometime in December, and she will represent AEA on her trip. The trip involves
community development of a large-scale poultry farm, whose biggest issue
involves sand-filtration for clean water. If you have any questions, or want to
speak with Megan about the trip, contact her at (479) 629-4856 or
mxp013@uark.edu.
-
Dr. Little is a post-doc in an optical
electronics lab who has experience working in Guatemala. He is interested in
becoming involved with AEA.
-
Zach proposes having a fun get-together some
night in the future.
-
Alex says that two groups, Students of
Sustainability Council (SSC) and Portfolio Against Poverty (PAP), are pursuing
the same causes as AEA. Megan also says that SSC has a
mixer every month at Arsaga’s.

-Project (Rocky and Casey Report)
> Two days would be the fastest assembly time for a contractor; worst case scenario would be one week
> Ben's design is 80% completed, and he still needs to run it by a structural engineer when he is done to make sure that the tower will not fall apart. Ben needs to put about 30 more hours into the deisgn, and this week he is supposed to be slowing down with his industry job, freeing up time to finish the project design
> The cost per linear foot for the beams is probably going to be about $5.00
> The total project cost is still estimated to be $17,000.00
-Trip dates (Rocky and Casey Report)
> November 1, 2012 (length: about 6 weeks)
> The tower should be finished on this trip, if it is taken
> Ben thinks that we would be able to assemble the water system on this trip. He is looking towards 3-4 days of work, doing things for Henyo, including the tie-in. He is also looking for possible fundraising opportunities with the Rotary Club he is familiar with.
